Tips for Families

Fallingwater is the consummate “family home”. Built for the Kaufmann family in 1936, Fallingwater remains a popular family destination because there’s truly something for everyone. However, when bringing a family that includes younger children, it helps to keep a few things in mind. To make the most of your time here, we offer the following helpful tips:

  • Children think Fallingwater is cool, with the waterfall, the natural landscape and all mysterious nooks and crannies throughout the house. But please remind them that it is also a museum. Prior to coming, explain that while we want them to love the place, there will be restrictions on what they can touch, fiddle with and sit down on. You can also try some of our families activities.
  • There are no public restrooms in the house itself, so make sure children take care of business at the Visitors Center before starting the tour.
  • For the safety and comfort of all visitors, infants and children must be six years old to accompany you on a Regular Tour of Fallingwater and nine years old to accompany you on any special tours. It just makes sense, because it’s a lot of walking for little ones.
  • If you have younger children (between the ages of 5 and 9) you may want to consider our Family Tour.  This tour is designed for the children and has hands-on activities, a walk along the stream and a visit to selected rooms in the house.
  • If you will be bringing very young children to Fallingwater, you may use our on-site Family Room.  The Family Room is an unsupervised area where you or a member of your party must stay with your children while you wait for the rest of your party to complete their house tour.
  • Families may also choose to hike the grounds or nearby Bear Run Nature Reserve while waiting for the rest of their party to complete their house tour.
