Directed by movement artist Pei-Ling Kao, electroViolet is a movement and sound improvisation collective where Kao and guest artists enter unfamiliar territories through structural improvisation, collaborating on equal footing to find synchronicity without dictating or directing, and exploring the abstract and poetic intersections.
In its milestone tenth edition, Pei-Ling Kao (movement) and Jorge Bachmann (sound) bring the performance, body electric X, to Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece, Fallingwater. This site-specific work emphasizes the profound spatial intertwining and interpenetration between the human body, the structural lines of the house, the surrounding natural environment and sound. body electric X functions as a living inquiry into how form and environment coexist.
Pei-Ling Kao
Pei-Ling Kao 高沛齡 is a Taiwanese dance educator, dance-maker, and performer whose work explores movement modalities across cultural, disciplinary, and artistic practices. She is the 2026 Nutting Fallingwater Institute Artist-in-Residence. Her research and creative interests include movement improvisation, bicultural and hybrid movement vocabularies, dance lineages, choreography, and interdisciplinary collaboration. At the core of her practice is a belief in movement’s ability to transcend language to expand how we experience, understand, and feel dance.
Kao is a professor of Theatre and Dance at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She received the Endowment for the Humanities Award (2026, 2023, 2018), the OVPRS Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Work (2025), the Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching (2022), and a Junior Faculty Research Award (2018). Her work has also been recognized with a San Francisco Bay Area Isadora Duncan Dance Award (2012), which includes an additional nomination in 2013. She received the Lo Man-Fei Dance Fund from Taiwan’s Cloud Gate Foundation in 2016 and support from the MAP Fund in 2021.
Jorge Bachman
Jorge Bachmann (Sculpture · Photography · Sound)
Jorge Bachmann is a San Francisco-based multidisciplinary artist and curator. He has been an active presence in the city’s experimental music and dance communities since the early 2000s.
Working across sculpture, photography, and sound, Bachmann’s practice is both eclectic and deeply rooted in attentive listening. His work ranges from subtle musique concrète soundscape installations inspired by the ideas of Dark Ecology to minimalist performances with analog modular synthesizers.
Since the early 1980s, he has explored the strange, unique, and often microscopic sounds of everyday life. Through field recordings and immersive installations, he blurs the boundaries between natural soundscapes and human-made environments, inviting audiences to reconsider their relationship to the sonic world.
Bachmann has exhibited and performed throughout North and South America, Europe, Japan, and Taiwan.
Maile Speetjens
Maile Speetjens (BFA, Emerson College, MFA, University of Georgia, Athens) serves as Associate Professor of Costume Design/ Technology at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Originally from Kaua’i, Maile’s work in costumes has spanned from Boston to Hawaii. Representative recent projects include Pagliacci (Hawaiʻi Opera Theatre, HI), Twelfth Night (Lyric Repertory, UT), Conversion of Ka’ahumanu (Kumu Kahua Theatre, HI), and ‘Au’a ‘Ia: Holding On (University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, HI).
