Where Art and Nature Meet: Sogetsu Ikebana Workshop at Fallingwater

A program of the Fallingwater Institute

Join teaching artists from Sogetsu Pittsburgh for a creative exploration at the intersection of art and nature, held at Wright’s masterwork of organic architecture. This special ikebana workshop will be held on Fallingwater’s Pottery Terrace, led by Sogetsu Pittsburgh’s founder and principal teacher Reiko Nakajima.

Get inspiration during a guided tour of Fallingwater and an introduction to the modern Sogetsu school of ikebana founded in 1927. The workshop will include a demonstration of the process of crafting an ikebana arrangement, followed by participants creating their own arrangements with guided instruction. Surrounded by the distinctive setting of Fallingwater, both architecture and nature will serve as inspiration.

Registration fee is $100 and includes materials and equipment, which are yours to keep, including select cut flowers and branches sourced from Fallingwater’s landscape.

  • Exceptional access and guided tour of Fallingwater, an international landmark included on the UNESCO World Heritage List
  • Hands-on learning and instruction from sensei Reiko Nakajima
  • Materials, equipment, and cut flowers included with registration fee

About the Instructors

Sogetsu Pittsburgh

Sogetsu Pittsburgh is a collective of ikebana practitioners dedicated to studying and sharing the modern art of Sogetsu ikebana through workshops, special projects, and exhibitions. Founded in 1990, the group introduces the practice to the public and community through collaborations with various organizations and artists.  They have worked closely with the Andy Warhol Museum, Phipps Conservatory, Cleveland Botanical Gardens, Carnegie Mellon University, and others. Recent major projects include Gei : The Beauty of Ephemeral and Eternal, a 2024-2025 multidisciplinary group exhibition with select artists at Contemporary Craft, one of the country’s premier art and craft spaces and Elements of Balance, a 2023 Fallingwater Institute residency and curated installation throughout the historic house, terraces, and grounds. The collective continues to be led by Nakajima and Sewell as principal instructors and is active with Ikebana International Pittsburgh Chapter #25, established in 1959 by Kay McKenna of Greensburg, cultivating the appreciation of ikebana in the region.
