In conjunction with Touchstone Center for Craft’s exhibition Auböck: The Gallet Collection, which runs from May 4 to July 28, 2024, an installation of select works is on display throughout Fallingwater. These works represent five generations of the internationally renowned Werkstätte Carl Auböck, located in Vienna, Austria, and in operation for over 120 years. This famous workshop is recognized internationally and represented in important collections around the world.
The exhibition at Touchstone Center for Craft and installation at Fallingwater present objects from the Gallet family’s collection and include rare and important examples of metal-working, woodwork, and ceramics. These objects seem right at home inside Fallingwater, their beauty and design blending seamlessly with Frank Lloyd Wright’s interiors and the Kaufmann family’s collection of fine and decorative art.
Edgar Kaufmann, jr., who donated Fallingwater to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, also directed the Museum of Modern Art’s Good Design program of 1950-1955. Recognizing the quality, craftsmanship, and functionality of the objects created by Werkstätte Carl Auböck, Kaufmann and the Good Design jury often selected them for exhibition. The fruit strainer, designed by Carl Auböck II and on display in Fallingwater’s kitchen, is just such an example.
